Who are you?
My name is Angie Elita Newell and I am originally from Fort Simpson in the Northwest Territories, I belong to the Liidlii Kue Nation and I currently reside next to the mountains in North Vancouver, Canada.
What do you write?
I write lyrical literary fiction and historical non-fiction, as an indigenous woman of North America I am currently focused on our history through the lens of our ancestors. I knew I wanted to be a writer from the age of six and was a born story teller, oral story telling is the backbone of our culture and I was active participant from a toddler onwards. I more than love writing, it resides in my soul, I can’t image my life without creation.
Where do you write?
I write at the kitchen table or my desk with hilroy notebooks, zebra gel ink pens, a MacBook, and post-its, lots and lots of post-its in all different colors and sizes.
When do you write?
I try to work on my craft at a minimum a couple hours a day and like most writers I spend a good portion of my waking hours daydreaming about what I am going to write.
Why do you write?
This world inspires me, she is so beautiful and it is my hope that through my art more people will awaken to this truth, we are all one energy.
How do you overcome writer's block?
Writers block to me is a signal that the idea is not yet ready to be birthed, I never force my art I flow, so that means I move into something else, and if no writing is willing to be crafted by me I delve into academic research and read fiction that stirs my soul, my last favourite writing hiatus was spent with Brooklyn, by Colm Toibin, which I found awe-inspiring.
Bonus: What do you enjoy doing when not writing?
When I am not writing I enjoy cooking wholesome creative food, wandering through the mountains and cities, making music and enjoying time with my daughters, all the while new stories dance in the back of my mind.
